What will I learn?
You will learn a variety of skills and knowledge that are required to be an effective practitioner. The content of the course enables you to engage with theoretical discussions, deepening your understanding of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
You will also gain a wider understanding of how theory and wider issues such as policies and professionalism influence practice so that you can start to consider how to effectively prepare your own students for their futures.
On a practical level you will carry out an action research project that provides the opportunity to design and trial innovative and progressive ways of teaching and learning.
This qualification covers all aspects of teaching in the Further Education and Skills (FES) sector and maps fully to the L5 Learning and Skills Teacher occupational standard (ST0149).

How will I be assessed?
There are a variety of ways that you will be assessed on the course in order to evidence a range of practical skills and knowledge, these include written academic essays, report writing, presentations, and portfolio building.

Entry Requirements
All candidates must:
- Undergo an initial assessment designed to determine whether a level 5 qualification is appropriate and achievable
- Hold a qualification which confirms a minimum of Level 2 in mathematics and English
- Hold a qualification in the subject they wish to teach/are teaching. For academic subjects it is expected that teachers will hold a degree in their subject specialism. For vocational subjects it is expected that a teacher should be qualified to at least one level above the level they intend to teach. Where this is not possible because such qualifications do not exist, teachers should have the highest qualification available and/or be able to provide evidence of substantial professional experience in their vocational subject
- Have access to 150 teaching practice hours
- Have access to two placements and a total of 250 hours of practice.
All students will provide evidence of a current and relevant DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service 2012).
An interview will be required. Holding the L3 Award in Education and Training would be an advantage. This qualification is approved for learners aged 19 or above.

Progression & Career Opportunities
Those that are interested can proceed to top up to a Bachelors Degree. On completion you will be qualified to practice teaching or training within the lifelong learning and FE sector. Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS), Advanced Teacher Status (ATS), teaching in post compulsory education, MA/M.Ed qualification.
