This is an industry led, one-year course, equivalent to four GCSEs. This course is a UAL qualification that focuses on the fundamentals of art and design within the Special Effects Make-up industry, developing your skills and knowledge, to provide you with the basic skills you need for a career in the Special Effects Make-up industry.
This course will allow you to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Special Effects Make-up & Prosthetics. We work with industry professionals and local film studios that help students get the skills they need to succeed in the industry.

What will I learn?
This Special Effects Make-up course will introduce you to many aspects of film and TV designs ranging from ageing, make-up and special effects such as cuts, scars and skin disorders. You will learn how to create aliens, zombies and unworldly creatures alongside other special effects. You will learn to use art skills and photography alongside your 3D skills to design and present your work and create a stunning portfolio that will support your progression.

How will I be assessed?
The University of the Arts London (UAL) Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design is assessed through a series of projects designed to provide students with an interest in art and design, with the opportunity to explore the materials, methods and processes that support art and design activities, and to begin to develop some related technical skills. The first 7 units are delivered with a Pass or Fail outcome.
A final project (The FMP) decides the students overall grade for the year which is graded at: Pass, Merit or Distinction. Student work is externally assessed and scrutinised by External Verifiers from the University of the Arts London to ensure that academic standards are adhered maintained.

To join this programme you will need 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 (or equivalent) including Maths and English.

Progression & Career Opportunities
Successful completion of the Level 2 course with a minimum of a Merit grade, will allow you to progress on to Level 3 Special Effects Make-up.
If you aspire to have a career in industry, fashion, theatre or film/TV these courses will equip you with the essential skills and experience that you will need. Additional Information
A portfolio of creative work must be brought to interview.
A studio fee to pay for course materials, kits and trips is required, this is approx. £330 but may vary each year. A bursary is available to help with costs if required. We strive to support our student learning through termly trips, trips will vary each year depending on location and cost.
Your course will be timetabled over 3 or 4 days, with approximately 10 hours of directed homework per week depending on the level of course. Our days run from 9am to 4.45pm.
Your study programme includes your vocational course alongside Maths, English, Tutorial and Career Progression sessions, attendance to all aspects is mandatory.
