At Buckinghamshire College Group we provide emergency first aid courses for schools through our fantastic HealthTec centre. Recently a local school provided this training to their pupils. One pupil then used this invaluable knowledge to provide essential first aid to his mother whilst she had an unexpected seizure at home.
A teacher from the local school wrote to share this news with us;
“A parent has emailed in to say how much the HealthTec workshop helped her son know what to do when she had a suspected seizure at home. He got her into the recovery position, checked she hadn't swallowed her tongue, called the ambulance and kept his sister calm. Everyone was very impressed with his calmness. He then spoke to the Neurologist on the phone from school to describe what had happened. The Consultant was incredibly impressed with him and his maturity. She said it was so useful that the students got the essential First Aid.”.
The student’s mother who has now fully recovered said “it was invaluable knowledge he put into action. He was confident in what he was doing, which enabled him to keep calm and help his younger sister process what was going on. She thinks that course was worth its weight in gold.”
It is great to know that our amazing HealthTec courses are providing the essential knowledge and confidence to be used in these situations and we hope the parent has recovered well from this incident.
HealthTec’s Emergency First Aid for Schools programme has been specially adapted from the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course to meet the needs of people who work in a school setting. The extra topics include in the syllabus are Asthma, Allergic Reaction, Resuscitation and choking in children. This course can be delivered at HealthTec or any chosen venue.
