In a powerful demonstration of collaboration, training, and community engagement, our college recently hosted a highly successful Major Incident Exercise at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in Quainton. The large-scale simulation served as a unique training opportunity for both Buckinghamshire’s emergency services and our own students, bringing classroom learning to life in an unforgettable way.

The exercise was carried out in two phases. First, Buckinghamshire’s emergency response teams – including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics – responded to a simulated major incident scenario set within the authentic surroundings of the heritage railway centre. The simulation tested their coordination, communication, and rapid-response skills in a controlled but highly realistic environment.

Following the professionals, our Uniformed Services students took centre stage, re-enacting the scenario and stepping into the shoes of first responders. This practical experience allowed them to apply the skills they’ve developed in their studies and gain first-hand insight into the pressures and procedures of managing a real-life emergency.

Adding to the realism, our Special Effects Makeup students created a wide range of lifelike injuries for the exercise participants, from cuts and burns to more complex trauma. Their artistry contributed significantly to the immersive nature of the event and have all those involved a more impactful and authentic experience.

Equally essential to the day were our Health and Social Care students, who performed vital triage roles throughout the exercise. They assessed ‘casualties’, prioritised treatment, and supported patient care – highlighting the importance of healthcare workers during major incidents and giving our students a valuable taste of working under pressure.

The event was a shining example of cross-department collaboration and experiential learning at its best. It provided our students with the opportunity to engage with real-world professionals, test their skills in a live environment, and gain confidence in their future career paths.

We extend a massive thanks to Buckinghamshire’s emergency services for their involvement and continued support, as well as to the staff and students who worked so hard to make the day a success. Your dedication, professionalism and teamwork truly brought the event to life!
