This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Year 12 students from Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School for an immersive HealthTec taster session in our state-of-the-art Healthcare Simulation Lab. Designed to provide a realistic glimpse into the world of healthcare, the session gave students the opportunity to diagnose and treat robotic patients through hands-on scenarios that tested their teamwork, problem-solving, and clinical decision-making skills.

All the visiting students are aspiring healthcare professionals, with ambitions ranging from medicine and pharmacology to midwifery, nursing, ad paramedic science. This experience served as an excellent first step in preparing them for their future studies and careers.

During the sessions, students were divided into groups and rotated through different station in a simulated hospital ward. Each team worked on five different patients, each displaying unique symptoms and vital signs. Using case file information and responding to evolving patient conditions, students had to determine diagnoses and provide appropriate treatment – just as real healthcare professionals would in a clinical setting.

This visit is part of an ongoing community outreach programme organised and facilitated by our college’s dedicated HealthTec team. The initiative is designed to inspire and support local students considering careers in healthcare, offering them valuable practical experience and a deeper understanding of the skills and challenges involved in the field. Feedback from both students and staff was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the session as engaging, educational, and eye-opening.

We look forward to welcoming more students in the future and continuing to provide these valuable experiences that bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world healthcare practice.
