Foundation students Stanley and Skye have recently returned from Brisbane, Australia after being selected to represent Great Britain as part of the GB Judo Adaptive Team in the Virtus Oceania Asia Games. They were joined by hundreds of athletes from more than 25 different nations.
Skye, who discovered Judo at the age of 7 and trains at Berkhamsted-based Rushjudo Club is Great Britain, European and World Champion and more recently became Special Olympic Gold medallist in Dubai 2019. Stanley, who also trains at Rushjudo; joined the British Team more recently and has already won gold at The Adaptive Judo British Open and The Adaptive British School Judo Championships.
Both Skye and Stanley did amazingly well at the Virtus Oceania Asia Games with Stanley bringing home Silver for Great Britain and Skye bringing home gold.
Skye and Stanley both spoke about their experience before and after the Games.
Skye said,
Before I left, I was really nervous and it was beginning to affect my mental health. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to carry on with Judo. After being in Australia, I really want to carry on and hopefully join the Paralympic Team. I’m going to Holland next week and hopefully I’ll be picked to go to France next year.
We then spoke to Stanley.
Before I got to Brisbane, I was very nervous about competing. I really didn’t expect everyone to say G’day to me all the time, but they did. Some of the fighters were really stubborn to beat, it was very hard but I had a lot of fun. When I won a medal it was just amazing! Next, I want to go to the top and compete in the Paralympics.
We would like to congratulate Skye and Stanley on their incredible achievement. We can't wait to see what they do next!
