In June, Buckinghamshire College Group celebrated its annual Student Awards Ceremony. Along with recognizing a handful of our amazing students across our department, it also gives us the chance to celebrate some of the great employers we have the privilege of working with.
We are proud to share that after being nominated by our apprenticeship team, we awarded our Apprentice Employer of the Year award to L&C Carpentry.
Our Apprentice Employer of the Year award recognizes an employer who has made a significant contribution to apprenticeships. They have been actively engaged with their apprentice and their learning and made a significant impact on an apprentice’s future career. L&C Carpentry was nominated by Steve Williamson.
“The Apprenticeship team has worked closely with Ian and Vicky for a number of years now and has witnessed their dedication to providing high-quality training and opportunities. During their partnership with Buckinghamshire College Group, L&C Carpentry has trained 11 apprentices, with an impressive 90% continuing to work happily with the company and advancing in their roles. Ian Leslie, the Company Director, promotes a supportive environment by assigning his most experienced carpenters to mentor roles, allowing them to pass on their extensive skills and knowledge. This approach ensures that apprentices receive the guidance they need to succeed. Vicky Cannell, the Operations Director, actively supports apprentices by regularly monitoring their progress and offering assistance on a wide range of matters. Overall, L&C Carpentry operates professionally, prioritizes health and safety, and promotes fairness while investing in ongoing training and development. I believe L&C Carpentry deserves recognition for their commitment to their apprentices.”
Lucy Milton, our Head of Business Engagement and Sales and Sarah Harding, Head of Workplace Development, recently headed to L&C Carpentry’s offices in Westcott, Buckinghamshire, and spoke with Vicky Cannell, Operations Director.
What do apprenticeships bring to your company?
“It provides a fresh perspective. The knowledge and new techniques learned in college contribute significantly when brought back to the company and shared with those who have been here for many years. This exchange introduces new ideas, fosters learning, and helps to further develop our team.”
“Apprentices have a better understanding of PPE for health and safety and its importance. The reinforcement they get from the learning at college is a real benefit as when they come to us this is a pre-requisite.”
“Apprentices are trained in our operational processes, learning our quality standards and performance expectations. This not only enhances their skills but also contributes to strengthening the company’s reputation.”
“Approximately 60% of apprentices stay employed with us or transition to self-employed contractors who then work for us.”
